The Kuranda Scenic Railway is a famous historic rail line connecting Cairns, on the coast, with Kuranda Village, high on the Tablelands in the Mareeba Shire. It offers spectacular views or Barron River Falls along the way. In this blog post we share photos from the Kuranda Scenic Railway and our thought on the experience. We also share costs, ticket information, and things you should know if you plan to ride the train to or from Kuranda from Cairns or Freshwater Station.
KURANDA SCENIC RAILWAY, QUICK GUIDE.
No time to read our full guide? Here are the essentials.
1. You can catch the train, or get off the train, either in Cairns Central or Freshwater Railway Station. Allow one full day of your vacation for this excursion, there and back. You can book a train ticket, single or return from Cairns, here. We use this company ourselves and we find them very reliable. A simple rail ticket is the cheapest option, no extras are included (approximately $58 single $80 return). You may also board at Freshwater (Smithfield) (book here), the cost is the same.
2. To book Railway tickets without the Skyrail (when the Skyrail isn’t running during renovations on certain days in July – Nov 2026) with hotel transfers from Port Douglas, Palm Cove, or Cairns, you need to select this option.
2. You combine the train ride with the Cairns Skyrail Cable Car Ride from Smithfield. For a luxury “Gold Class” experience, including food and beverages on the train, book this day out, with pick up and drop off at your Cairns hotel. The standard service is much cheaper, hotel pickups can also be included, look here.
3. The train ride between Cairns and Kuranda, takes just under 2 hours. The train ride between Freshwater and Kuranda takes about 1.5 hours.
4. From Port Douglas you can book this package, it includes transport to and from the station, the Cairns Skyrail ride to Kuranda, and the Scenic Railway ride down.
5. The best time of year to see Barron River Falls is after rain (photo below), the wet season (summer) and autumn. However, you’re risking rain, humidity and heat by visiting in the hotter months. You will be cooler and more comfortable in winter. Peak time in Port Douglas and Cairns is usually July.
Kuranda Scenic Railway

Kuranda Scenic Railway From Cairns
The cheapest way to catch the train is to book a regular rail ticket. If you’re staying in Cairns, make your way to Cairns Central shopping centre, the train station is there. You can book a train ticket, single or return from Cairns, here. We use this company ourselves for all transport bookings. A rail ticket costs approximately $58 single $80 return, but it does vary.

Kuranda Scenic Railway From Smithfield (Freshwater Station)
If it’s easier for you to get to Freshwater than Cairns, for instance, if you are driving south from Palm Cove or Port Douglas, you can board the Kuranda train at Freshwater. The cost is usually the same but the train ride is half an hour shorter. If you book a package with the Skyrail and Scenic Railway you will generall use Freshwater station with a shuttle back to the Skyrail car park.

Kuranda Scenic Railway Gold Class
The Kuranda Scenic Railway Gold Class ticket is an upgrade on the basic Heritage Class ticket. It’s a more luxurious experience, you can sip a glass of wine and order from a dining menu. Your seating will be assigned and you’ll receive a full service experience. Book a Gold Class day out here.
We haven’t tried Gold Class ourselves because the last time we took the scenic railway down from Kuranda we were having a family day out with 2 kids. We didn’t think it was worth paying the extra (about $100 Au) for the children, but it would be a lovely thing to do as a couple.
Kuranda Village
If you book a package with the Skyrail and Scenic Railway, or the Scenic Railway and bus (when the Skyrail is closed) you will have time to explore “The Village in The Rainforest”, Kuranda.
Highlights include Kuranda Koala Gardens, Kuranda Markets and the Butterfly Park. You probably need at least 2 hours to wander around Kuranda. There are plenty of cafes and food stalls to enjoy, and the village is very walkable.
Kuranda Skyrail & The Scenic Railway
In 2026 the Cairns Skyrail is undergoing renovations and will be closed on certain days between July and November. Your best option is to To book Railway tickets without the Skyrail with hotel transfers from Port Douglas, Palm Cove, or Cairns, you need to select this option.
The announced dates are here.
Can You Stay in Kuranda? Hotels & Accommodation
There isn’t much by way of accommodation in Kuranda. This is maybe because the town pretty much shuts down after the last train leaves in the afternoon. Instead consider some of the lovely lodges and retreats in the rainforest around Kuranda, such as this one, which has amazing reviews.
